The Snakes' Nest

Narrated by Ettiene De Vesaconte, priestess of the Temple of the Void, disappeared in mid-1999.

To say that anyone trusts us would sound like a crude joke on my lips, my dear friend. No one trusts a Setite, and thanks to that, they and we usually leave one another in peace. The sects on one side, and us on the other. Each with our own domains. Naturally, we do not trust the sects either. We know the hatred they bear us for helping sink their city and profiting from them all, but at least they have the consolation that we will not interfere with them directly... not until it becomes strictly necessary.

The greatest problem we face right now is the Serpents of Light. I do not know how many of them are now in the city, but with the Sabbat's ego and pride wounded, those Cobras will try to exploit the situation to the fullest, find allies within their sect, and sweep us aside. But do not despair. We Setites know how to correct our brothers, and in time, I believe, they will return to the fold.

If you want to hear more, you may go ask the Sabbat or the Camarilla, provided you prefer lies to truth, of course. Why else would you be here if not because you seek the truth? There is no doubt they paint us as ignorant predators, not merely of individuals but of whole communities, as scum that traffics in drugs, cuts rivals to pieces, and spends its nights on weed and angel dust.

Listen to me. We Setites have been in Prague almost as long as the Camarilla. Even in past ages, when our homeland lay far away, we knew Prague was a key point in the middle of Europe, and we had no intention of missing our opportunity. We arrived by way of the great mercantile routes, extending our aims from distant Egypt and bringing Europe's nobles the wonders of lands beyond the east and south of their vast continent. Of course, we did not limit ourselves to jewels, fabrics and trinkets. We brought ourselves as well, and with us a large part of our lineage.

It must be said that we have not always enjoyed a numerous presence. Even so, we have always shown ourselves to be territorial, and we have fought decisively to defend our domains. How could it be otherwise, with the Camarilla penning us inside a miserable cage of a neighbourhood and, worse still, forcing us to endure that breed descended from Italians and gangsters? At the very least I can tell you this: by the time the Camarilla and the Sabbat stopped striking one another directly in the face, the Setites were already permanently installed in our little arena. Now it is only a matter of time before we learn whether they mean to expel us. If so, they will pay dearly for the attempt. In any case, who truly wants the Jewish Quarter, unless one intends to open a travel agency?

Yet we understand the value of peaceful co-existence and for a long time we have worked actively with both the Sabbat and the Camarilla to preserve that state of affairs, or else we have simply ignored them and let them play their games alone. We have a number of "amusement parks" scattered across the city, enough to satisfy our reckless spirit when necessary, and we do as we please, like a serpent gliding silently through reeds beside unsuspecting children at play. We also maintain several temples, some for ourselves and others built to show people what they wish to see in us. Who are we to impose our own sense of good and evil over another's desires?

Times change nonetheless. Now more than ever the city is troubled on every side, and it is only a matter of time before it ends up biting its own tail. It appears that the Sabbat and the Camarilla are preparing for their final little battle, and few of us have any interest in a war that will not distinguish military from civilian casualties. What is clear is that, if matters turn ugly, we will choose a side, but no one should expect our support out of gratitude for having "tolerated" us. Like every form of help we provide, everything has its price.

Observer Note:

This conversation led me to think that, unlike in other European cities, here in Prague we are not dealing with Setites as a unified whole, but rather with several individual cults.

For centuries, various Setites have tried to create a channel through which different cults of their clan might resist the Camarilla together while it held the territory, and above all resist the Sabbat without recognising its rule should it conquer the city. Others surely know more of Setite matters than I do, but the possibility of reaching such an agreement sounds more like a long-term plan than a settled arrangement.

At present, Prague's Setites are solitary figures who belong either to small cults with shared aims or to isolated individuals who sell their services to the highest bidder.

Before the war between sects, they were gathered around their refuge, a temple whose location I do not know, which they called the Temple of the Void and which was apparently destroyed during the war against the other independent clans.

Even so, and despite everything, they unite in a common front when necessary, and these nights survival seems reason enough to stay together. Saying what tactics they will choose would be premature; better to give time its due, but remain cautious.
