When the Devil Knocks at Your Door

-Narrated by Marcus Konietzko, Toreador clan member and chess player, survivor of the Nights of White Ash.

Before any move, the most important thing is to know the board on which you will play. This was the greatest lesson any Kindred in Prague could teach and learn from their peers.

The Camarilla of Prague, under Prince Vassily's rule, never had the chance to understand the fog that dulled their senses and kept them from seeing what would happen years later, what made Prague the city it is now. Those of us who had even a faint idea of the maneuvers forming in the shadows were either ignored or branded traitors for voicing our suspicions.

In the end, harsh reality is never without irony: those of us hunted as witches for our beliefs became the few survivors who still possessed the courage and means to continue existing in this prison called Prague.

Though there had always been a few Sabbat pieces in Prague (especially in New Town), the moves required to bring more pieces onto the board were a difficult strategy. When the Sabbat was ready for its grand move, those pieces that had long sat on the bench and drifted like ignored ghosts through our streets, right before our eyes, did not wear the usual black and white of ordinary chess. This time, the Sabbat chose the easiest pieces to hide, and the Camarilla did not see their color until it was too late.

I speak of the gray pieces of the Jyhad, I speak of the Independent Clans, the great ignored.

A grave mistake...
